Hi friends,
The last time that you heard from me, I told you that I was going to undergo an open-heart surgery that would hopefully extend my cardiac lifespan to something resembling normal expectations for the first time without adding shrugged caveats about the amazing rate of medical technological development these days pretty.
I also said that’d it’d be such a quick week away, you may not even notice I’d was gone.
Well, the good news is the surgery worked… after two weeks sleep, I finally woke up on Wednesday.
So the bad news is that none of this made me any better at math. Then again, to be honest, I thought it was 50/50 proposition at best and as I got closer to the surgery date, feared that the odds weren’t even that great, so maybe my rough statistical models are better off terrible.
I’m still in the hospital and still recovering, but thanks to the efforts of an amazing medical team, my parents, my in-laws, my brothers, and the strongest person know, my wife Julia, I should be on the upswing.
It’s been two weeks of comas, ventilators, bleeding, tough moments, a lot of wierdly large pills, disoriented moments, later revelations, and the unerring luck of having health insurance in this country that so often tries to kill you…. I’m not quite out of the woods yet, and I’d be too superstitious to say otherwise anyway, but things are looking up. It’ll be incumbent on me to keep myself healthy, which has always been a preoccupation, but now will become an obsession.
The same can be said about my obsession with the injustices of the American health care system and the economy that extracts life from us.
Here’s a piece I produced on that before the surgery:
I’m hoping to head home tomorrow and continue recuperating from a bit further downtown. Thank you for the kind words of support. I’ll be in touch soon with lessons learned about the health care system and economy during this experience.

This is a second full-time job, and I’m looking to expand. There are no corporations, dark money think tanks, or big grants sponsoring this work. It’s all people-powered. So, I need your help.
For just $6 a month, you can buy a premium subscription that includes premium member-only newsletters with original reporting and analysis.

I don't have much but I sent a contribution to progress report to help tide you over while you recover. I hope others that can, send something also. We make us safe.
So glad you pulled through. Sounds like you have a pretty great support system. I'm fairly new to your substack but I share your newsletter to everyone I know. Please take time to heal! We'll all be here when can return. Thank you for all your hard work.
