Welcome to a Tuesday edition of Progress Report.
When I promised this weekend to deliver a Good News edition of the newsletter on Tuesday, I didn’t anticipate that it would lead with one of the most significant and delicious stories in American political history. Consider this my thank you note to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who last night delivered a sweeping indictment of Donald Trump — and his entire squad of slimeballs, burnouts, and dummies — on charges related to their failed attempts to steal Georgia’s electoral votes in 2020.
This is the fifth indictment against Trump, and fourth for attempting to thwart democracy and not be a loser. In a sane world, this would end both his political career and life outside of a federal prison, but we’re long past living in a sane world. At the very least, perhaps yet another indictment for attempting to overthrow the government will finally convince the Beltway political media to treat Trump’s treason as serious and damning story unto itself and not as one of many factors in a never-ending horse race.
Personally, I’m mostly hoping that we get to see Rudy Giuliani on the stand, preferably after he drinks his lunch. What a coda for one of the sleaziest public figures of the past half-century.
As we await the mug shot that will break Etsy, let’s take a look at some of positive developments and reasons to celebrate. We’ve got stories on voting rights, climate change, gun control, student debt, health care and more.
Voting Rights
It’s hard to believe after such a brutal decade, but this summer continues to deliver positive developments in the ongoing fight to roll back the GOP’s vast degradation of democracy. Even more shocking than that? Much of the good news involves the federal judiciary and is happening in very red states.
