I know this isn't about the content, but it is important for the left not to use slurs. I'm talking about the line"contemptible Butterball dipshit Randy Fine." He's not evil because he's fat. You wouldn't call Madison Cawthorn "a contemptible cripple dipshit" because that is offensive. Same goes for fatphobic comments. They're beneath you.
Margaret Killjoy had a good post about why the left shouldn't give in to conspiracism, which is basically the last thing you said - it's disorienting and ultimately makes people feel powerless. Then they give up trying to make things better, which is something we can't afford to do right now.
My immediate response to this incident was indeed conspiracism because of course this is exactly the kind of thing trump and his cadre of ghouls and orcs would do - manufacture a crisis and try to take advantage. The speed with which the right wing meme corps starting bleating the phrase "white house ballroom" would seem to speak to that.
What I'll say, though, is that reaction was distinct from the molotov being lobbed at sam altman's house, or the same act directed at ICE facilities, or the takedown tesla acts, etc.
Listened to a podcast by Mike Nellis and ???? They took a calm and sober look at the shooting attempt as well as noting the intentional hysteria by the Right for distraction/headlines/profit/etc/ One thing stood out to me: the shooter never got near the dinner--he was 2 floors away. Also it seemed the security was not lax. They were on this guy like white on rice and had him down and in cuffs. Then, in total opposition to Trump & his ilk, this guy was no radical. An article by someone who knew him and looked at his resume, described him as a very sincere religious sort who spent a lot of time in bible study and critical thinking about what he came to understand. His posts detailed what he considered contradictions betw what is taught and what is actually written. It seemed he was seeing his religious duty to protect those who were being harmed by Trump's horrific policies and practices. Isolation typically creates extreme thinking that can often result in extreme responses. He seemed to be a loner type, not one to share his thinking and, thus, not subject to modification of his actions from group thinking. He actually may turn out to be someone eliciting sympathy despite his extremism. We shall see.
Maybe you should do whatever -- go to church; move to the Midwest; move to Pitcairn Island -- to get your "sense of earnestness" back? I think it would look good on you and it stabilizes your wounded spirit in the sewer Trump has made us all live in.
Mine is intact after ... all these years, although I'm pretty sure it diminished my attractiveness in every market I functioned in.
Living all those years as a woman was certainly helpful. It was understood, during 90% of those years, that sex pests were far from the worst kind of men out there ... and they could do anything they wanted. Good to know.
Upshot is -- you might as well be earnest. No one around you likes it, or you, but it keeps you sane.
Okay, enough time and energy spent on Trump's latest effort at distraction and self-gratification. Let's focus on something that matters...releasing the Epstein files, ending the war, fixing the economy.
