Scoop: Trump’s new gag order threatens food supply
Why should farmers need to know about the climate or clean water?
Welcome to a Sunday night edition of Progress Report.
Thank you to everyone who tuned in earlier this evening for my live interview with Lindsey Boylan, the former New York economic development official who became the first whistleblower to publicly accuse disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment.
Now that Cuomo is attempting a comeback and running for mayor of NYC, Boylan has stepped up to once again speak out against the corrupt, grandma-killing sex pest, a sacrifice necessitated by the silence of New York’s most powerful politicians.
It was an expansive conversation about the personal and political, and we touched on city, state, and national issues. I’ll send the full video and some select clips on Monday, but in this newsletter, I’m diving further into news that I first broke over at More Perfect Union today.
Note: Unlike many progressive advocacy journalists, I’ve gone fully independent, with no special advertising deals or close relationships with powerful politicians to temper what I write. My only loyalty is to you, the reader, and to the cause of progress — economic justice, democracy, human rights, and standing up to oligarchs.
A new study revealed that right-wing influencers dominate the online media space, so it’s never been more imperative to create an alternative progressive media network that can compete with the massive amounts of misinformation flowing every single day. You can help keep Progress Report afloat and build that network for just $5 a month — every subscription helps! And for a few more days, I’m now offering 20% off subscriptions to make it even more worth it!
A division of the USDA that monitors the environmental conditions that impact the nation’s agricultural systems and food supply has been hit with a scientific gag order that forbids the use of dozens of relevant and mission-critical terms in key documents and agreements.
An email sent on March 20th reminded staff that they could not use an assortment of terms in contracts and other agreements, including those covering research and end experiments, submitted to the Agricultural Research Service, the in-house research arm of the USDA.
Sharon Strickland, a section head at the ARS, warned that including the terms — including “climate change,” “clean energy,” and “safe drinking water” — would lead to automatic rejection.
Strickland, a longtime government employee and USDA staffer, told employees that the blanket ban was being implemented to ensure compliance with the Trump administration’s executive orders. According to a source, it’s been left unclear whether the terms can be used in internal reports. Work has largely been halted either way, as the ARS has been hit with a hiring freeze and throttled employees’ procurement credit cards.
The ARS is responsible for overseeing the health of the nation’s farmland and the crops it produces, and is counted on to develop solutions for diseases, disasters, and other threats to the food supply. It works with research universities, which have also come under attack by the Trump administration.
The division was operating over 600 research projects in 95 locations and most recently had a $1.7 billion budget. Ongoing projects include research into diseases that impact wheat cereal, unlocking disease resistant maize crops, and heat-tolerant soybeans. Each would seem to be endangered by the new language moratorium.

Wait, Before You Leave!
Progress Report has raised over $7 million dollars for progressive candidates and causes, breaks national stories about corrupt politicians, and delivers incisive analysis, and goes deep into the grassroots.
None of the money we’ve raised for candidates and causes goes to producing this newsletter or all of the related projects we put out. In fact, it costs me money to do this. So, I need your help.
For just $5 a month, you can buy a premium subscription that includes:
Premium member-only newsletters with original reporting
Financing new projects and paying new reporters
Access to upcoming chats and live notes
You can also make a one-time donation to Progress Report’s GoFundMe campaign — doing so will earn you a shout-out in the next weekend edition of the newsletter!
So, the little dick-tater has decreed from on high, that basically all terms relating to:
climate, air, water, soil, chemicals, food crops, energy sources (other than oil & gas), & half-dozen other categories having to do with our food production, science, agriculture, health, safety, etc.... can no longer be used in any reports, findings, requests/results, Gov't documents, etc... etc...
Is that about right?!?
Gee...did he forget about bees & other pollinators, beneficial bugs, earthworms, & the word "organic"?? Or, is that going to be in the 2nd edition of "Trump's Bible of Forbidden Food & Science Words"??!
This most ignorant jackass makes other Authoritian Rulers cringe!!! (IMHO)
Thank you for your work to share accurate information and keep people safe.
