Platner's emergence from the political ether to almost assuredly winning the primary in what is a key race for the Democratic Party speaks volumes for the pathetic state of said party. I have no special insight into the man's character, but I am not comfortable with his candidacy. I wouldn't be comfortable with his candidacy regardless of his many apparent faults. How did we come to this point where a total unknown can win a Senate primary in a key state? Personally, I like my candidates to have a track record of some sort or, at least, some prior endorsements or political affiliations. Regardless, I hope for the best and the end of Collins's career. But don't be shocked if he turns out to be a charlatan.
I'm ALMOST shocked that the Democratic party honchos urged Mills to get back in the race. Did they forget about Mamdani and Cuomo? The upper crust of that party seems totally allergic to winning. Why can't they fight with the same zeal that they showed when Republicans Swiftboated John Kerry? Oh, that's right, they didn't push back on that at all. I remember their campaign manager after the election saying that they were proud of the campaign they ran. It's not a volleyball tournament you bought and paid for morons.
Yes, Establishment Democrats DID forget about Cuomo and Mamdani. They're OLD. They've been in power so long, not only can they not remember what it was like to be a regular human, THEY CAN'T ENVISION NOT BEING IN ABSOLUTE POWER OVER THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
The power has corrupted them (this is not a recent thing!), and they've forgotten every responsibility they ever held to US.
So yes, they need a wakeup call, or better yet, systematic replacement quickly, or our country will succumb to the fascist threat, finally and for another 3-5 decades.
Interesting article. I had donated to gov. Mills after she stood up to Trump publicly and defended Trans folks. But she just didn't have the fire in her belly that it would take to beat an incumbent. We are in the battle of our lives against the worst criminal in public office history. having read your opinion and saw his interviews on Chris Hayes, now is the time to get behind Platner. He may not have led the perfect personal life but has owned up to it and wants to do better.

Like many young men who were recruited and trained to kill on command, the war he experienced left him with PTSD and maybe a volatile personality.
This speaks more to a need to help veterans to "decompress" after the horrors of war than his personal moral failings.
His wife is outraged that what she revealed to his campaign committee as a matter of course so that it would not come as a surprise, somehow made its way outside of his campaign and into public domain. The fact that she still supports him tells me that perhaps the reason he is so publicly targeted is that he is a charismatic and successful contender in an election battle.
It would be more interesting to figure out who attempted to scuttle his campaign and why.
